Ashoknagar District (Hindi: अशोकनगर जिला) is a district of Madhya Pradesh state in central India. The city of Ashoknagar is the administrative headquarters of the district.

Geography

The district has an area of 4673.94 km². It is bounded on the east by the Betwa River, which separates it from Lalitpur District of Uttar Pradesh and Sagar District of Madhya Pradesh. Vidisha District lies to the south. The Sindh River forms the western border of the district, which separates it from Guna District. Shivpuri District lies to the north.[1]

The district has a population of 688,920 (2001 census). It is divided into five tehsils: Ashoknagar, Chanderi, Issagarh, Mungaoli and Shadora. The district was created on August 15, 2003 when it was split from Guna District.[1] Shahdora a town 15 km from Ashoknagar had been given tehsil status in September 2008. History

The region was ruled by the Scindia family as a part of Isagarh District of the Indian princely state of Gwalior. King Ashoka return from Ujjain victory on night halt on pachhar land so that reaseon Pchhar called name of Ashoknagar.

Agriculture

The greater part of the District towards south is in accordance with the Malwa Plateau while, in north, especially round Chanderi the region Surrounded by hills and covered by forest is typical of the Bundelkhand topography. Largely depended upon on the rainfall for its cultivation, the area had meager irrigate sources in the part. However, the construction of Moll-Dam in the post independent period and the Conch dam project late has fulfilled this long followed of the area is a bring way and with new schwas coming will boost further the agricultural economic prospected of the District the principal crops of the District come Wheat, Jowl, Groom, Maize Rice Sugar cane, Olives. According to the 2011 census Ashoknagar district has a population of 844,979,[2] roughly equal to the nation of Qatar[3] or the US state of South Dakota.[4] This gives it a ranking of 475th in India (out of a total of 640).[2] The district has a population density of 181 inhabitants per square kilometre (470 /sq mi) .[2] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 22.65 %.[2] Ashoknagar has a sex ratio of 900 females for every 1000 males,[2] and a literacy rate of 67.9 %.[2]

Ashoknagar has places of interest as follows:

1.Thubonji - an old site of religious interest for Jains

2.Kareela - mythologically birthplace of Luv and Kush, sons of king Rama, a famous carnival site.

3.Anandpur - spiritual meditation centre having huge carnivals twice a year.
